World Teachers Day: Why It Is Celebrated On October 5?

World Teacher Day is an annual event, celebrated on October 5, to pay tribute specially the teachers for their important role in shaping the future of the next generation.

World Teacher Day, also known as International Teacher Day, was established by UNESCO (United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). It is celebrated to commemorate the adoption of 1996 ILO/UNESCO recommendations concerning the status of teachers, which is a standard setting instrument that answers the status and situation of teachers around the world.

The focus of the 2023 celebration theme, “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”.

The Nigerian government has taken several measures to improve the standard of teachers in the nation.

Former President, Muhammadu Buhari approved the sum of N75,000 as a stipend per semester for aspiring teachers undergoing degree programs in Education in public universities in Nigeria and also, the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) students will get N50,000 per semester as a stipend as part of the deliberate efforts to attract students into the teaching profession.

 

When do other countries celebrate their Teachers’ Day?

Indonesia Teacher’s Day Date: November 25

In Indonesia, National Teachers’ Day is celebrated every November 25th, the birthday of the Indonesian Teachers’ Association, the PGRI.

India Teacher’s Day Date: September 5

India marks it’s Teachers’ Day in honour of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on September 5, 1888. Dr Radhakrishnan was India’s first vice president and second president. He was a great scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna recipient.

China Teachers’ Day Date: September 10

In China, Teachers’ Day, is celebrated on September 10th each year. This day is dedicated to expressing appreciation and respect for teachers across the country.

USA Teachers’ Day Date: May 7, 2024

In the United States, Teachers’ Day is a non-official holiday on the Tuesday of the first full week of May. The day is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. A number of activities are organised in schools, to honor teachers. The celebrations may continue for the entire week of May.

Iran Teachers’ Day Date: May 2

In Iran, Teachers’ Day, is celebrated on May 2nd each year.

Turkey Teachers’ Day Date: November 24

In Turkey, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on November 24th each year. This day is known as “Öğretmenler Günü” in Turkish and is an important occasion to honor and appreciate the contributions of teachers in the country.
