For some of us, early understanding about s**uality came from random mixture of movie scene, few vague conversations from adults during our teenage years and classes at school. As a result, much of what we know about s**, reproduction and maybe every other thing is actually a collection of half truths and myths, few of which are harmless but when it comes to Sex and reproduction, half truths can lead to STIs, relational stress and unexpected pregnancies. Here are some myths and misconceptions about Life,s** and reproduction:
Oral s** and Anal s** are safe alternatives to Vaginal s**
The definition of “safer s**” depends on what you are staying safe from. If your only concern is having unplanned pregnancy then Anal and Oral s** are safe alternatives. Oral and Anal s** does not protect against STIs like Syphilis, chlamydia, HPV, Gonorrhea that can be transmitted through Oral and Anal s**.
You can catch Sexually transmitted Infections (STIs) from a Toilet seat.
Sexually transmitted infections can’t live outside the body for a long time especially not an a cold, hard surface like a toilet seat.
You can’t have s** or get pregnant when you have your period.
It may be messy and the situation unlikely but possible depending on how long your menstrual cycle is. For most women, a single menstrual cycle lasts 28 days and only about 5 of those days are taken up by their period. During this short bleeding period, the unfertilized eggs or Ovule and Uterine lining are eliminated but before a period starts, women experience Ovulation, a 12-16 day window when a mature egg is released from the Ovary. Some women have shorter cycles which means their Ovulation stage also happens earlier coupled with the fact that Sperm can live inside the human body for up to 5 days means that if the timing is right, a sperm can live inside the female body for just long enough to survive the period and fertilize an egg.
If you have period s**, make sure you use a barrier contraceptive like a condom to prevent an unplanned pregnancy.
S** burns a lot of Calories and can help with weight loss.
If you are having tons of s** because of its cardio benefit , you’ve believed a false truth. Experts estimate that 30 minutes of s** burns about 85 to 159 calories. so if your goal was to lose a pound, you would have to burn about 3500 calories which translates into 35 sexual encounters. However most people are not having s** for thirty minutes but closer to 5 minutes making s** an unreliable and unreasonable weight loss tactic.
Tilt your head back when you get a nose bleed
This is actually a really dumb thing to do. The blood runs down your throat when you tilt your head backward into your stomach, potentially causing you to vomit. Instead try pinching your nose, sitting down and leaning forward. Blood might get on the floor but that’s better than throwing up.
Relying on your partner to provide condoms
It is easy to assume that it is your partner’s responsibility to carry condoms especially male since he will be the one to wear it. This is wrong. It is both parties’ responsibility because technically, both of you are wearing it. Take control of your sexual and productive health instead of relying on your partner. You don’t know how long the condom they carry had been with them and if it has expired.
