Break the Bias

The theme for 2022 international women’s day is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. For the world to be a better place to live in for the upcoming ones, all biased attitudes towards gender are to be brought to equity.

Women most especially needs to be enlightened on egalitarianism for all genders, there’s a need for women to know that they are much stronger and better than they seem to be. The roles of women in the society can never be underestimated, women are so important in every aspect of the society ranging from the family, education, religion, business and even politics.

Research has proved that 43 percent of the world’s agricultural labor force- rising to 70 percent in some countries. In Africa for instance, 80 percent of the agricultural production comes from small farmers, most of whom are rural women. It is generally known that agriculture can be the engine of growth and poverty reduction in developing nations. In the family, it is the mother that most urges children both male and female to attend and remain focused in school.

The role of women is at the front end of the chain of improvements leading to the family’s and community’s long term capacity.

All women needs to be brought into the light of their prominent roles in the society.

Women need to stand up for themselves and put an end to gender discrimination and prejudice. They should create a world that is diverse, equal and inclusive. A world that respects the diversity and difference in both genders, delegates and distributes responsibilities as widely as possible, builds on strength rather than weakness and fosters self criticism and self evaluation.

Anyien Yuol says “Equality can only be achieved if the diversity, difference and qualities of women are truly valued”.

March 8 is the day set aside for the global celebration of all women who are real architects of the society. It was born out of socialism, protest and a fight for labour rights. While Women’s Day travels its history to feminists movement in Europe and America in the early 1900s, the day became mainstream after it was adopted by the United Nations in 1977.

The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States in February 28 1909 when women protested against harsh working conditions.

Most women find it difficult to express theirselves to the world due to one experiences orgthe order they might have been through, when the other gender is applauded for a role she does, some are inherently shy and some are in the shackles of fear. There must be a change in the ways women are treated.

”Women speaking up for themselves and for those around them is the strongest force we have to change the world”.
