The House of Representatives has begun an investigation of The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, over misappropriation of funds.
Wednesday 18, the Speaker of The House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, presided over the plenary where the decision to probe the misappropriation of N165 billion was taken. It was decided that Mr Aregbesola and Prisons Chief, Haliru Nababa, be probed. The House arrived at this resolution due to a motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu. According to Daily Post, “The House is disturbed that despite this Act and increase in budgetary allocations to the Nigerian Correctional Service to drive its renewed mandate, the tempo and quality of the service have remained the same if not retrogressing,” Elumelu said.
“The House is worried that the working conditions of staff and inmates’ welfare have deteriorated notwithstanding, the over N165 billion budget allocations to the service in the last two years.”
Based on this motion, the House decided to have its committee on Reformatory Institution investigate the allegations made, and report back to the House within twelve weeks. The house has unanimously agreed to investigate into the issue and see if Aregbesola is guilty.
Thursday, the House expressed its displeasure over the media misinterpreting the decision; claiming it was a political fight instigated by the speaker, Mr Gbajabiamila – who is believed to be a staunch supporter of of Tinubu. It should be recalled that Aregbesola has revolted against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu after the issues with Oyetola was not able to be resolved by Tinubu.
The speaker cleared the air, that the House took the decision to investigate the state of Nigerian Correctional Service under the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; the investigation has nothing to do with Tinubu, All Progressive Congress, APC, National Leader. He has dissociated Tinubu from the issues.
