Great Ife SRC Constitutes Electoral, Petition Committees Ahead of Students’ Union Elections

The Great Ife Students’ Representative Council (SRC), under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Ademola Awe, resumed from recess on Saturday, July 11, at Awo Cafe, with a Business Sitting during which lawmakers constituted the Electoral Commission and the Electoral Petition Committee ahead of the forthcoming Great Ife Students’ Union elections.

While inaugurating the process, the Speaker cited Article 4, Section 61 of the Great Ife Students’ Union Constitution, explaining that the Electoral Commission must first be duly constituted before any aspirant can formally become a candidate in the elections.

He further noted that although the constitution empowers the commission to conduct all elections within the union, it does not expressly prescribe the number of members that should constitute the commission.

Following nominations from the floor, representatives from the various faculties were nominated and unanimously accepted to serve on the Electoral Commission before being immediately sworn into office.

The newly inaugurated Electoral Commission comprises: Chairman/Chief Electoral Officer, Comrade Olalegan Olamitayo (Faculty of Law); General Secretary, Comrade Adekola Afeez (Faculty of Education); Financial Secretary, Comrade Umunakwe Genevieve Ada (Faculty of Social Sciences); Public Relations Officer, Comrade Akanni Taiwo (Faculty of Technology); and Chief Security Officer (Ad-hoc), Comrade Kolawole Timileyin (Faculty of Science). 

Other members of the committee included: Comrade Fasanyan Aanuoluwa (Faculty of Administration), Comrade Idowu Adebola (Faculty of Pharmacy), Comrade Bankole Samuel Adedolapo (Faculty of Agriculture), Comrade Orimogunje Olagoke Emmanuel (Faculty of Arts), Comrade Adamolekun Temitope (Faculty of Computing Science), Comrade Ogunrinde Samuel Oluwadamilare (Faculty of Environmental Design and Management), Comrade Jogbodo Jesutofunmi (Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences), Comrade Arije Mayowa Samuel (Faculty of Clinical Sciences), Comrade Emmanuel Segun (Faculty of Dentistry), and Comrade Babatunde Salisu (Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences)

The Council also constituted the Great Ife Electoral Petition Committee in line with Article 4, Section 56 (2) of the Students’ Union Constitution. The committee, comprising nine members, will adjudicate petitions arising from the forthcoming elections.

The members are: Chairman, Comrade Daodu Taiwo Lynda (Faculty of Clinical Sciences); General Secretary, Comrade Fasanya Alex (Faculty of Pharmacy); Public Relations Officer, Comrade Awe Olajuwon (Faculty of Science); Financial Secretary, Comrade Omoboriowo Joshua (Faculty of Environmental Design and Management); Comrade Marvellous Chukwuka (Faculty of Law), Comrade Adewoye Ayomide (Faculty of Agriculture), Comrade Adewale Paul (Faculty of Social Sciences), Comrade Adeniji Kayode (Faculty of Arts), and Comrade Adepoju Damilare (Faculty of Technology).

In another significant resolution, the Council adopted a motion granting the Faculty of Nursing independence from the College of Medical Sciences. The decision formally recognises the Faculty of Nursing as a stand-alone faculty within the Great Ife Students’ Union, rather than a unit under the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

The sitting concluded with the Speaker announcing that the Council would proceed on recess and reconvene next week to continue its legislative busines
