Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), on Thursday, 29 January 2026, witnessed a major boost to its transportation system as the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu (CON), commissioned 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and 30 tricycles donated to the university.
The event took place at the university sports complex. The purpose of the buses is to enhance smooth transportation on campus. Before her arrival, certain dignitaries were on site preparing a proper welcome for her. The Ooni of Ife and his chiefs, alongside various departments, were present to make her feel welcome, adding colour to the ceremony. Amongst the departments that were present, the Dramatic Arts and Music entertained the guests and showcased school culture with lively performances.
The shuttle buses are portable means of transportation convenient for eight passengers. They are meant to tackle the transportation problems faced by students on campus. The First Lady had previously expressed her displeasure with the heavy use of motorcycles on campus. The commissioning of buses further reinforced her consistent commitment to the growth and development of the institution.

In the past, she commissioned and donated a 2.7km road, a monument, an ultra-modern hostel, and a pavilion in the vicinity of the university. These projects have contributed to improved accessibility, infrastructural development, and enhanced the learning environment as a whole. The current commissioning, therefore, builds on these earlier efforts and proves her commitment to the growth and welfare of the university. This generous gesture was met with gratitude by the school management.
In an interview with a correspondent from InFocus News Agency, Queen, a student of the Department of the Institute of Education, said, ‘I think the donation of buses is very thoughtful of the First Lady because it will help ease transportation burdens for most students. The commissioning event is an experience that is worth the while as I got to see great people I would not usually see, the Ooni of Ife and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.’
Another student, Victoria, also stated that the donation is quite impactful and compensable, especially because buses were scarce at a point on campus.
The event ended on a joyous and exciting note for the school and its students.
