The Faculty of Education launched its 2025 Teaching Practice Orientation with the theme “Towards Effective Teaching and Counselling” on Monday, September 22nd, 2025 at the First Bank Lecture Theatre. This session was designed to prepare student-teachers for their practicum, featuring lectures on effective teaching, classroom management, and the role of counselling in education.
Dr T.A. Adebisi, the Chairperson of the Teaching Practicum Committee, opened the event by welcoming participants and emphasising the importance of the orientation exercise.
Delivering the welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor A.A. Adediwura, inspired students with the message, “To be a teacher is a calling.” He explained that teaching is not a lesser profession but a noble vocation, urging students to embrace the role with purpose, commitment, and vision.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr A.A. Alarape, focusing on Instructional Resources and Effective Teaching. He described resources as the bridge between teacher knowledge and student understanding, categorising them into visual, audio, audio-visual, and environmental aids. He urged teachers to plan lessons using these resources, improvise with local materials, and involve students in the preparation process.
Subsequently, Dr B.A. Adeshina presented a lecture on Lesson Planning, Delivery, and Evaluation. She emphasised the importance of measurable objectives, using action verbs such as “explain,” “define,” and “identify,” introduced with: “By the end of the lesson, students should be able to….”
In his session on Classroom Management, Prof. C.O. Fashiku stressed that a teacher’s personality and emotional intelligence are crucial for maintaining order. He urged teachers to be mindful of their mannerisms and levels of self-awareness.
Prof. W.O. Adeniyi discussed the Teacher’s Personality and Effective Teaching, highlighting the need for a positive attitude, mastery of subject matter, respect for students, and strong communication skills.
To close the lecture series, Prof. Mrs A.A. Shobola delivered a talk on “Counselling and Teacher Well-Being”. She encouraged participants to prioritise their mental health, manage stress, and view counselling as a tool for personal and professional growth.
Ultimately, the orientation programme equipped student-teachers with practical tools for the classroom and also, reminded them of the deeper purpose behind the teaching profession.
