On the 17th of September, the Faculty of Education organised an orientation program for part two and three students ahead of the Teaching Practice Exercise.
The orientation programme which was held at First Bank Lecture Theatre popularly called FBLT was attended by the students in training. The orientation commenced by 10:00 am with the early arrival of students and lecturers likewise.
The teaching practice exercise, a course on its own titled EDU 202 and EDU 303, for part two and part three students, respectively, allows students to practice all they have been taught on the art and act of teaching.
After recognising the presence of lecturers from the faculty like Dr Oteyola, Prof. Lanre Idowu, Dr Ajibade, Dr Obadiora, Dr A. M. Femi – Aderinto, Dr A. O. Kareem, Dr Alarape and other respected lecturers, the dean of the faculty Prof T. O Bello was invited to the high table.
Dr B. A. Adesina, the chairperson of the teaching practice committee, gave the opening speech as she advised students to be diligent and punctual and embrace collaboration, diversity, and inclusivity.
Afterwards, the dean of the faculty, Prof T. O Bello had the floor and was introduced as the number one teacher. She likened the teaching practice students to bricklayers which she said are the most important set of people in building a house.
Later on, she went on ahead to state the purpose of the gathering which was to take students through the steps on how to mold lives. She also added that students should be around all through the school period, dress well, and engage in extracurricular activities in their respective schools.
Prof. A. A. Sobowale sensitized the students on the topic “Teachers’ Personalities.” She explained some traits that define the teaching profession, which are friendliness, discipline, willingness to learn, togetherness, being a role model, and building boundaries.
Dr. Oteyola from the Department of Educational Technology spoke on “The Use of Instructional Materials.” Before fully delving into the topic, he asked the students to repeat a saying, “What I hear, I forget, What I see, I remember, What I do, I understand”.
He further explained the importance of the teaching material and rounded up by telling the students not to overuse instructional materials as they can be a source of distraction.
Furthermore, Dr Oteyola stressed the need for management and control which he defined as the ability to manage an activity within a short time and the demonstration of being in charge. To round his speech off, he admonished the teaching practice students to have ground rules, engage in eye contact, and be disciplined.
In addition, Dr A. J Obadiora was up next for another round of speech. His topic was “Content Delivery”. He said the teaching practice is a practical examination of what the students have been taught so far in various educational courses and advised that the teachers in training make their students curious.
Finally, Dr O. O Olamide spoke to the student’s counsellors on the topic “Expectations from School Counselors” before the students were allowed to ask questions
In conclusion, the orientation program ended with a closing remark from the chairperson, DR B. Adesina, as she wished all teaching practice students a wonderful period throughout the six-week exercise.
