OAU Declares Three-Week Mid-Semester Break following Student Protest

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has declared an immediate three-week mid-semester break following a student protest led by the Students’ Union on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Following the demonstration, which was organised as a response to the management’s inaction on the welfare concerns of the students, OAU management announced the Senate had approved the break with immediate effect to safeguard the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the general public.

‎The University stated that despite efforts to engage students and appeal for calm, the situation continued to create tension on campus. As a result, the break was considered to restore order and create an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue.

‎According to the release, the management will engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised by the students and work towards restoring normal academic activities. Parents and guardians were advised to take note of the development and make necessary arrangements for their wards.

‎Students were also urged to remain law-abiding and use the period responsibly. The institution reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of students and to maintaining a peaceful and conducive learning environment.

Academic activities are scheduled to resume on May 19, 2026, subject to further directives.
