The Education Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, in a circular released on December 23rd, announced their intention to embark on a new project dubbed the “Light Up Edu” initiative. This new project aims to create a radiant and illuminated environment for students, enhancing their study experience while ensuring a secure atmosphere.
In a conversation with the President of the Faculty of Education, Adelakun Damilola, he stated, “Illumination helps with better assimilation and contributes to both brain function and student security.”
His motivation for this project stems from the belief that “lighting up the faculty building will encourage our students to utilise the nighttime space for studying without fear. It will also provide a clear view of our faculty at night, helping to alert our students to any potential dangers. I am concerned about the ease and social well-being of my students.”
Damilola emphasized that while this project is personal to him, he is collaborating with the faculty’s Executive Committee (EXCOS) to ensure its success. “We also want to restore the lighting poles on the Education fields and plan to use floodlights to ensure longevity.”
According to the president, the estimated budget for the project is over 300,000 Naira. The project will seek sponsorship both within the university community and from external sources. Classes will resume in January, and it will officially commence.
