The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) convocation play was spectacular on Thursday, 13th December 2024, at the Oduduwa Hall. The play, titled “Man Talk Woman Talk,” was written by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi, and produced and directed by Abiodun Olayiwola.
The event began with the rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, followed by the Great Ife anthem. The audience was then treated to an exciting Bulgarian folk dance performance, which set the tone for the evening’s entertainment. Bulgarian folk dance is a traditional form characterised by its energetic and lively rhythms, colourful costumes, and intricate footwork.
Moreover, the play, “Man Talk Woman Talk,” was a humorous and thought-provoking drama that explores the age-long debate between men and women. Set in a courtroom, the play employs wit and satire to challenge societal norms and stereotypical values, prompting the audience to ponder deeply the complementary roles of men and women.
Through the play, the playwright uses humour as a metaphor for reconstructing society, making pointed commentary on gender roles, human relationships, and societal expectations.
At the end of the play, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed his warm appreciation to the Department of Dramatic Arts for their outstanding performance. He encouraged the department to collaborate with the university’s lake garden to provide entertainment for visitors during training and workshops, generating additional revenue for the university. The play was attended by members of the university community, including students, staff, and faculty members.
