The renovation of the Obafemi Awolowo University campus gate has been underway since last semester, and it has sparked a variety of reactions. The university aims to elevate its standard, as this endeavour further establishes OAU as Africa’s Most Beautiful Campus.
From observations, the renovation is in its final stages. The gates have been installed and opened for the passage of vehicles—an improvement from the temporary route that was utilized during the renovation process.
Abidakun Comfort, a student from the Department of Crop Production and Protection, shared her thoughts with an InFocus News correspondent. She stated, “I think it’s fascinating. I’ve heard some people say it’s taking too long. Of course, it’s quite easier to bring down a building than to rebuild it, so I still think it’s amazing work.
Also, I must commend the fact that a temporary route was created for vehicles to enter and leave campus. The idea of the ‘Ori Olokun’ figure is very sweet. It’s giving off proper Ife vibes.”
Another student, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed his thoughts: “In all sincerity, the structure looks promising and I believe once it’s done, it will be a very beautiful sight to behold.
I feel the school should focus on more pressing issues. To me, taking down the former structure seems unnecessary, although I don’t know the reason behind that decision.
Some hostels are already dilapidated and need repair. I think there are just a bunch of pressing issues that should have come first before the school gate renovation.”
In an interview with the Dean of the Division of Students’ Affairs, he explained that the school desired to have the gate revamped and painted before the 2023/2024 convocation ceremony.
However, the decision to expedite the renovation process does not lie in the hands of the school authority, as there is a consultant in charge. Although the final touches are still lacking, he estimated that, with the pace of construction, the project would be fully completed by the end of the year.
Furthermore, when asked about the expansion of the pedestrian area on Road 1, the Dean replied that it is a separate project from the school gate renovation. The expansion of the pedestrian walkway was made possible by the donation of the First Lady of the country, Her Excellency Oluremi Tinubu.
He clarified, “The expansion of the pedestrian area is part of what the donation of the First Lady is meant for. She is committed to elevating the beauty and nature of our campus. It is not just about growing flowers, as many people think.”
