The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have embarked on a 7-day warning strike on Monday, March 18, 2024.
This was stated in a memo released by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both associations, which explained that the strike action commenced after it had inundated the federal government with the need to pay the 4-month withheld salaries of its members in various universities and inter-university centers, but with no positive result.
The JAC noted that it had before the strike action called the attention of Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, and Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN, OON, the Minister of Education, to the injustice and unfair treatment of its members, which was contained in a letter, JAC/NS/VOL ll/277, sent to them on February 13, 2024.
Furthermore, in the memo, JAC stated that, in similar veins, it issued a press release on March 1, 2024, and also gave the Federal Government a 7-day ultimatum to resolve the issue, but the Federal Government did not take action.
With no positive response, the JAC has ordered its members to embark on a 7-day warning strike.
The memo reads, “Having waited patiently for the ultimatum to expire without positive response to our demands from the Government, this is to direct our members in Universities and Inter-University Centres throughout the country to commence in a 7-day warning strike effective Monday, 18th March 2024 in the first instance.”
