Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students this morning, Tuesday, October 3, have poured out in mass to stage a peaceful protest at the campus gate against the recent school fees increment.
This protest is in reaction to the recent school fees hike, which is over 300 percent increase of the former school fees which the students had paid the previous session.
Prior to staging the protest, representatives of the students’ union had earlier met with the university management on several occasions over the hike of the school fees, which resulted in the reduction of the original fees, but not up to the 50% reduction demanded by the students.
The students mount blockade at the campus main gate, carrying cardboards, as they prevent both academic and non-academic staff, vehicles and anyone access into the university’s premises.
At the gate, they demand a 50% reduction of the originally proposed price and requested for the installment payments promised by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire.
