The Faculty of Education, OAU, has been filled with excitement following the emergence of Amoo Deborah Oluwatimilehin as the best-graduating student from the Education and English Language unit, with a CGPA of 4.55.
In an interview with Infocus correspondent, Deborah attributed her success to God and hard work. ‘Honestly, I don’t think I have any other factor than God. It seemed like a mirage. I almost gave up; different people gave me bad reports of how impossible it was, but God made it possible.’
A dream fueled by Passion and Purpose
From an early age, Deborah knew she had an affinity for English. ‘I liked English right from secondary school,’ she recalls. In a public school with over 100 students per class, her consistently high scores in English and Literature distinguished her. Choosing Education and English as a complement to her love for English was a decision driven by the advice of a lecturer who saw potential in combining the disciplines for double honours.
Overcoming Challenges Through Faith and Hard Work
Deborah’s journey was with obstacles. From discouraging remarks to personal doubts, she faced moments when her dream of graduating with a first-class degree seemed unattainable. ‘At the end of Part 2, I thought it wasn’t possible. But in Part 3, I stared again, not minding past results,’ She says.
Crediting her achievements to a ‘possibility mentality,’ Deborah explains the importance of faith and perseverance. ‘It is God and hard work.’
Keys to Academic Excellence
Deborah’s approach to success was methodical and disciplined. Her study routine was structured from the beginning of each semester. She emphasised collaboration, attending tutorials, and maintaining active communication with her coursemates. ‘Don’t be a loner,’ she advises. ‘Walk with friends that push you to read’
She lists key habits that worked for her:
- Setting achievable goals
- Attempting past questions
- Attending classes regularly
- Writing detailed notes
- Seeking help from coursemates and tutors
Her rigorous efforts did not go unnoticed, as her peers often relied on her notes and guidance. Beyond academics, Deborah balanced her roles as a tutor, fellowship leader and fashion designer showcasing remarkable versatility.
Breaking Barriers in Education and English
Education and English language as a course, is often seen as challenging, with some doubting the feasibility of a first-class Degree in the field. Deborah has proven otherwise, becoming a beacon of hope for future students. ‘I hope they see the possibility of having a first class in Education and English,’ she says. ‘I want them to continue the trend and break all academic barriers.’
Her success shows the quality of education and opportunities at OAU. ‘This feat inspires my junior colleagues and makes my family and friends proud. I hope it opens doors of opportunities and scholarships for me while motivating others.’
Advice for Aspiring Students
For younger students aiming for academic excellence, Deborah stresses the importance of self-belief and persistence. ‘Believe in God, believe in yourself, don’t believe bad reports,’ she advises. She also encourages proactive responses to challenges, such as lodging complaints for questionable results. Her advice to her younger self resonates with practicality and humour: ‘Probably make more money,’ she commented.
The Road Ahead
With outstanding results, Deborah is setting her sights on further education. ‘Masters and Ph.D. abroad are in view,’ she shares, adding, ‘I just want to keep making Jesus proud.’ Deborah’s journey stands as a testament to the power of passion, determination and unwavering faith. She hopes her story will inspire others to dream big, work hard and achieve greatness.
