Inside the Second Semester Rush: Politics, Pressure and Campus Life

The second semester not only continues the academic session but also transforms it in many ways. Beyond regular academic activities, students can expect different events that shape both their social and academic lives. From student elections to final year activities, the semester offers a blend of structured engagements and social experiences that contribute to the overall campus atmosphere.

Here are some activities that characterise the second semester:

Elections

One of the most anticipated events in the second semester is the student election. The period where every student is either vying for a political post or actively supporting a candidate. Political fliers and banners are seen at every corner on campus, in classes, walkways, bus stops, and other landmarks. ‘So and so is coming’ is usually the mantra heard everywhere. Debates, rallies, and a constant online presence are used to create awareness. The election period revitalises student participation and also emphasises the importance of leadership.

FYB Activities

Aside from political campaigns that will pervade the campus, another important event that takes place in the second semester is the final year students’ activities. With graduation in sight, this set of students approaches campus life with a mix of enthusiasm and spontaneity, turning the most ordinary moments into something memorable. A full week is dedicated to themed activities – from Corporate Monday, to Denim Tuesday, Costume Day, and ‘Trad’ Friday by the end of the week. Other students who are not in this category also look forward to this week to admire and watch the different displays of outfits.

Dinners & Concerts

Beyond this, the semester is usually filled with a lot of parties. Departmental events and gatherings, hangouts, dinners, conferences, and summits are usually the social highlights of the second semester, providing students with opportunities to engage beyond the classroom and foster connections across all levels. These engagements usually keep most students busy and some might almost forget about academics.

Intense Academic Workload

Meanwhile, the second semester is still as academically demanding as the first, if not more.  Tests, assignments, and presentations continue to shape academic experience, requiring consistent effort and time management from students. For many, particularly those in their final year, project work adds an extra layer of responsibility making it essential for students to maintain a balance between academic responsibilities and social engagements that come with this period.

Unexpected Campus Buzz

As the semester progresses, unexpected trends and viral happenings also add to the bustling that is attributed to the second semester of the session. These are the little surprises that pop out of nowhere – like a funny challenge going on around campus, a new fashion trend, or a social trend that everyone is suddenly talking about. They keep the semester lively, giving students something to laugh about, join in on, or just shake their heads at.

Overall, the second semester blends academic responsibilities with a lively campus atmosphere creating a unique mix of experiences for students. While academic responsibilities remain demanding, the array of social events, departmental gatherings, FYB activities, and unexpected campus trends adds energy and variety to campus life. This balance of work and engagement makes students experience life to the fullest before the school year comes to a close.
