Tunde Onakoya, a Nigeria Chess Master, Coach and Founder of Chess in Slums Africa, begins the Chess Marathon in an attempt to win a world record.
He is set to engage in an intense chess marathon, aiming to play for 58 hours without a single defeat.
Fortunately, the chess master became popular when he used chess to bring kids out of slums to give them a better life.
Tunde Onakoya begin his attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest hour to play chess.
The challenged kicked off today, the 17th of April, and is scheduled to end on April 19.
To show their support for Tunde Onakoya, friends both at home and abroad have taken to the streets of social media to cheer the master on.
His fellow Nigerians residing abroad trooped out in their numbers to support Tunde at Times Square, New York, where the event is currently holding.
Among them is the famous Nigerian Afrobeat singer and songwriter, Adekunle Gold, known as AG Baby.
In his quest to bag worldwide recognition for the longest time for playing chess, he chose to play with another champion.
Onakoya will be playing against Shawn Martines, a US National Chess Master, throughout the 58 hours.
The current record holder, Hallvard Haug Flatebo and Sjurb Ferkingstad of Norway, lasted for 56 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds.
The chess master informed his followers on his social media page to announce his attempt to break the record.
He said, ‘I will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the longest chess marathon right in the heart of Times Square New York City…’
‘Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education…’
Furthermore, he also solicits everyone’s support for the incredible work.
His goal is to raise 1 million dollars to impact thousands of children. So far, 7000 dollars has been raised in support of his dream.
