During the total light blackout that just wrecked OAU campus a few days ago, Victoria Ogungbure, a part one student of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, was seen sitting under the ground trying to complete her assignment with the aid of streetlights at Motion Ground at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, 9 January 2024.
Victoria disclosed that she has been on campus since the evening of Sunday, 7 January.
“I came to campus since Sunday evening because I needed to complete my assignment and work on my painting, but the school and the country has failed me, so I need to improvise. And here I am in the open, not minding mosquitos bite on my skin because I need to complete this assignment,” she said.
She was painting the image of the popular nationalist, Nelson Mandela.
After a brief question and answer session, Victoria disclosed how passionate and determined she is to make “her name ring a bell in the world of art someday.”
She noted, “I discovered my talents in 2016 and delved into portrait in 2020 during the lockdown, and over time, I have painted and sketched quite a number of portraits. My greatest achievement last year was drawing Pastor W.F. Kumuyi and presenting the portrait to him myself. You need to see the joy in my face.”
Her high spirits, resilience, and dedication towards achieving her goals have been her drive to complete her assignment with the aid of streetlights amidst the total power blackout on campus.
“Nothing can hold me from achieving my goals and dreams. Not even total blackout in the country at large can,” she further noted.
