Desmond Akawor, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has resigned from his position after his appointment to the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) by President Bola Tinubu.
Akawor’s resignation letter, dated November 22, 2023, was addressed to the acting PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umaru Damagun.
In the letter, he disclosed that his resignation was connected to his appointment, and he had accepted the appointment to the RMAFC after consulting with party leaders and his family.
“I have recently been nominated for a federal appointment to the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission as the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State,” the letter read.
”After consultation with my leaders and family, I have accepted this opportunity to serve our country, which I consider a national service.”
Akawor also expressed his gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve as a state party chairman from 2020 to 2023 and handed over his duties to the Deputy Party Chairman, Hon. Aaron Chukwuemeka.
“Consequently, I have resigned my position as the Rivers State party chairman of our great party, the PDP, and immediately handed over all duties to the Deputy Party Chairman, Aaron Chukwuemeka, who has commenced action in this stead.”
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have steered the ship of our great party, the PDP, at the state level from 2020 to 2023, and especially grateful for your support and the support of the national body during my tenure.”
Until his appointment, Akawor previously served as Nigeria’s former ambassador to South Korea, Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory, CEO of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, and Executive Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (Engineering and Technical Services).
In a statement announcing Akawor’s appointment, Tinubu stated that he was confident that he would “deploy his robust experience across tiers of government toward the comprehensive reformation of processes that will ensure the most efficient and productive utilisation of allocations to all three tiers of government in Nigeria.”
