Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has officially announced the closure of all university offices on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, following a Federal Government directive declaring the day a public holiday in honour of the late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The university’s Registrar, K. A. Bakare, confirmed this in a special release issued on Monday, stating that the decision aligns with national mourning and tribute plans led by the Federal Government.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration earlier, noting that the holiday was set aside to pay respects to the legacy of President Buhari, who served the nation both as a military head of state and later as a two-term civilian president. The government praised his role in strengthening democracy, promoting transparency, and defending Nigeria’s unity.
OAU’s statement directed that all academic and administrative activities be suspended for the day. However, staff members in essential service units such as security, health services, and power supply are expected to remain on duty.
Late President Muhammadu Buhari passed away earlier this month, prompting a wave of national reflection on his political journey, reforms, and enduring influence on Nigeria’s governance landscape.
As part of the national tribute, flags will be flown at half-mast and prayer sessions are expected to be held in many parts of the country. OAU joins the rest of the nation in this period of remembrance.
