The Department of Chemistry at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has launched the Smart Chemistry Project, an ambitious initiative designed to revolutionise science education and align academic research with real-world problem-solving. The project was announced during the department’s first alumni reunion and fundraising event, and it aims to modernise teaching methods, upgrade laboratory facilities, and foster innovation among students and researchers.
The Smart Chemistry Project is positioned as a groundbreaking model for scientific teaching and research in Nigeria. It promises to enhance laboratory infrastructure with advanced instruments, simulation tools, and data systems, providing students with practical, hands-on training in critical areas such as pharmaceuticals, energy, nanotechnology, and environmental chemistry.
During the event, Professor Adeyinka Adesina, Dean of the Faculty of Science, emphasised the importance of adapting to modern educational standards. “Science education in the 21st century demands immersive experiences and tools that reflect real-world applications,” he stated. “This project is not just about infrastructure; it’s about nurturing students’ capacity to learn, innovate, and lead.”
In addition to physical upgrades, the project includes staff development, student mentorship, and partnerships with industry leaders. With over 1,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the department, the project aims to significantly enhance academic outcomes and strengthen research capabilities.
Former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, described the initiative as transformative, positioning the department as a hub of innovation and research excellence. “It’s a bold step toward revitalising science education for national development,” he remarked.
OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, praised the initiative as timely and aligned with the university’s broader mission of academic and research excellence. “We are proud to see our alumni taking ownership of the university’s future. This project demonstrates what can be achieved when stakeholders unite around a shared vision.”
The Smart Chemistry Project not only marks a new chapter for the Chemistry Department but also sets a benchmark for educational innovation across the country.
