OAU: Ife indigenes protest over appointment of new VC

The governing council and the management of Obafemi Awolowo University appoints Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire as the new Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University.

The announcement was made on Thursday, 17th of March 2022, at the University Secretariat. After a crucial examination of sixteen (16) candidate by The Joint Council and Senate Selection Board, Prof Bamire was finally approved as he was the highest scoring candidate.

After the announcement of the new VC, Ife indigenes gather at the front on the Campus gate to protest against the just appointed Vice Chancellor.
As they claimed, their candidate should be appointed instead being a true son of Ife land.

Following these event on Monday, the campus gate was shut by Ife indigenes and some thugs, who beat students mercilessly thereby obstructing movement of vehicles from entering and coming out of the campus. A group of women known to be Osun worshippers were spotted in the campus afterwards. They were all dressed in a white clothing, dancing and reciting incantations around the Senate building of the Campus.
Despite all these, the management remains silent to the protest by the Ife indigenes.

On the 22nd of March, more tension arises as Masquerade were spotted at the Campus gate offering sacrifices and praying against the enemies of Ife land.

“Unreasonable protest and sorcery in a university for four days now…and management has done nothing?
“Osun herbalist in the school premises. Locking the school gates. Beating of staffs. Smaching of students phone. Masquerade in front of Federal school……. Many students lamented on Twitter.

 However, Governor Oyetola appeals to Ife indigenes to give peace a chance while Governor Rotimi Akeredolu strongly oppose the protest.
